Herniated or Bulging Disks

The vertebrae of the spine are cushioned by spongy disks which act like little shock absorbers and keep the spine flexible. If one of these disks becomes damaged, either through wear and tear or some type of accident, it can bulge or break through its hard outer layer, which is called a herniated disk. A bulging or herniated disk can occur anywhere in the spine. If a herniated disk presses against one of the nerves located along the spine, it can lead to considerable pain in the back, legs or other area where the nerve travels. Other symptoms of a herniated disk include weakness, tingling, or numbness of the area associated with the nerve, and decreased bladder or bowel control. If you experience any of the symptoms of a bulging or herniated disk, you should immediately seek medical attention. If the disk is not pressing on a nerve the symptoms may be less severe or harder to identify. It is important to immediately seek medical attention if you are involved in an accident where any part of the back or spine have been wrenched or jarred quickly. The severity of a back injury may not be obvious right after an accident and symptoms may not develop until much later. Doctors can detect problems with your disks by giving you a thorough physical exam and by using advanced imaging techniques such as a CT scan or MRI. The early diagnosis and treatment of a damaged disk is very important and may reduce the risk of a more serious problem developing later. The initial treatment of a bulging or herniated disk generally consists of painkillers and prescribed rest. Alternative therapies such as acupuncture can also be very effective. In serious cases, back surgery may be recommended.

Back injuries are very common in several different Accident Types, especially in Auto Accidents or other Vehicle Accidents, Slip And Falls, Construction Accidents, Sports And Recreational Accidents, and Battery Cases.
